I decided to put my new snow tires and the versatility of the IS300 to test by driving upstate from Manhattan during the recent storm. No issues what so ever, and I was able to enjoy a bit more opposite lock the following morning.

While much of the drive through the city was boring, getting stuck behind staggered plows taking up all lanes, I put together a quick 15-second cut going through Time Square. Still, it was one of the few moments you forget about the pains of keeping a car in NYC.

Which did you get? My 530 has the Continental ExtremeContact DWS and they're having a rough time. Plus, my ABS, traction control and Stability control took a shit on me this winter so I need all the help on the ass end I can get...

I'm running Pirelli Scorpions on my winter wheels. Its my second winter running them. So far so good.

I'm running Firestone Winterforce tires, which are fantastic in the snow. I had them for my E30 as well.

Traction/Stability control are always turned off when I'm driving. Going into a terminal push (understeer) is the last thing I want when driving in the snow.

I'll have to look into them. Stopping isn't my big concern, my 5 has zero traction since the snow always covers about 1"-1.5" of ice underneath. I can stop fine enough but getting going again is hard - especially when 2nd gear starts and the slightest acceleration will cause the rear to start shifting a foot left and right.

I don't think you'll see much improvement with your BMW in those conditions of ice underneath snow. Seems like studded tires would be your best bet, but theirs not much you can do to get a RWD car to get going quickly from a standstill in snow.

There was an Audi with Quattro I pulled upto at a light on 6th ave in NYC and it clearly had the upper hand from the start... Although I did pass him once we got going.
